Let's face it at home most of us have surround sound, DVD player and a big TV. A couple of months after its been at the cinema you can hire the thing for less - cinema is dead or at least dying.
At least my local shows stuff like Alien, Apocalypse Now, Man Who Fell To The Earth etc. on a Tuesday night and for just ?2.50.

Hollywood's slump is currently a fill space article in all news media this summer. Admissions down, percentages plummet etc..
Partly it's due to quality, and also performance expectation. The gauntlet set down by recent in-built franchise phenomena (Rings/Potter etc) is proving hard to match, so there was bound to be a blowback. All three of this summer's big-hitters are underperforming at present. What Hollywood really wants is the formula for Pirates of the Caribbean - a pure studio product that came from nowhere and did sensational business.
I'd wait till the end of the year when Kong/Potter and Narnia are all rolled out before making any greater claims of demise, and this is all nowhere near the mid-eighties crisis when the studios really were on their knees.

I'm contemplating on seeing Fantastic Four. Not because I am a fan of the comic (Although I loved the cartoon 11 years ago), it's because of Jessica Alba. For whatever reason, I fancy her nowadays.

Cinema is is a slump!? I doubt that in Britain at the moment with Star Wars, War Of The Worlds, Sin City and probably Fastic Four packin' em in. Maybe you are referring to other parts of the world.
I don't quite understand that the cinemas are in a slump when two films that have come out have already broken existing box office records. My local multiplex always seems to be moderate to very busy...even during the weekdays.
Then again, if this is the case maybe its a true sign the recession is here with us now.
The simple reason a lot of movies don't get re-shown at the cinemas is simply because films in production are scheduled in months in advance and the cinemas wouldnt find time unless there was a window in the schedule to do it.
Your best best to see old movies at decent prices is to go to the Barbican which I hear is a great place to go and see old classics on the big screen.

Sorry OEJ but british cinema is currently down over 24% on previous relevent buisness release periods. They are expecting it to drop to around 28% by Christmas and the source of my research is UCA.
Even wilder is our local monoply adult R18 shop claims he's down by 40% on last year alone and says his distributors tell him the same story is all over.
The big electrical boys are also down as are the diy gang.
Unless that interest rate is dropped quite a lot by christmas I predict a storm to end all storms with the latest property boom going BOING.
We are all doomed so head for the hills

Some say the Cinema complexes have shot themselves in the foot by charging ridiculous prices for snack foods thus dimishing the market that can afford to come.Clamping down on people bringing their own snacks would have had a backlash as well

When Video first came on the scene Cinemas attendance dipped
No doubt it will turn around once again when the novelty of watching DVDs at home wears off
