Missing the point, as usual

Post by Pervert »

Live 8---you don't want to watch it? Fine, don't. I can think of things I'd rather be doing than watching Robbie Williams, Elton John, Snoop Dog etc. But the event isn't about them, or Geldof or Bono or any of those others that keep appearing on the TV news or in the newspapers. It's about focusing the attention of the industrial world's leaders on a moral issue, about people power (200,000 in Hyde Park, a quarter of a million marching in Edinburgh, well over a million at the Philadelphia concert) ensuring that something many feel strongly about isn't ignored.

For some of those involved it will be an ego trip, sure. But if it results in some positive action, does that matter?

By all means choose the major issues in Britain today instead---and watch which of the media whores in the Big Brother house gets to snog one another---that is your choice. But sooner or later you're going to be forced by circumstances to face what's happening elsewhere in the world.

Rant over.

It is a free concert, and the tickets were restricted.

Perhaps the most important thing that might come out of today is raising awareness in America, a huge country which is almost a continent of 50 small nations, where some folk never travel to the sea, let alone to another nation. The US has swayed between isolation and intervention politics for decades, but without many of its people knowing what it was all about. I'm not saying they're ignorant, far from it, but some just seem unable to see beyond their own shores.

If a groundswell of American opinion can influence the Bush administration, then the effort will not have been wasted.

Of course all those who voted for him were fully informed of all the facts before they voted...BALONEY.

Most who voted for GWB did so because of who he was-one of them-Redneck Christian
Thats called Blind faith IMHO

I see the percentage of people who believe GWB lied about the WMDs has just hit 52 percent. Those dieing in IRAQ must be finally making the faithful
think about the REAL ISSUES

Nothing hits home harder than when it effects YOU...trouble is at present we feel safe and secure so we ignore their plight..foolhardy

So it goes with Africa. It seesm so far away and just a flick of a TV button and its gone but the truth is what happens everywhere in the world eventually effects us all...its all interconnected via the Weather

People living in REAL poverty have this propensity to strip the land of everything.Thats a dangerous practice on any scale for the world
Probably on a par with third world countries chopping down rain forests for cattle to graze so McDonalds can get enough patties for their burgers

Unsustainable and highly destructive - LONG TERM - out of sight out of mind

Rant over

cheers

The only useful thing that will come out of LIVE8 will be people who sign-up to sponsor a child on a monthly basis

The money raised will be a pittance compared to what the world bank or the IMF could raise in a second

Debt is an issue and in the short term will give impetus but long term if Trade isn't on the table we'll be back to square one and
as for how to stamp out corruption...GOD KNOWS

Maybe we in the first world should stop trying to turn Africa into our own image and just let them be but thats never going to happen as we need them as much as they need us...thats the truth

The free market economy has a major flaw it needs to be ever expanding & increasing...unsustainable

2nd rant over and out

cheers

"But sooner or later you're going to be forced by circumstances to face what's happening elsewhere in the world."

we have to face up to it every day in our towns and cities.murder, gang rape, violent crime, drug dealing, sex slavery.half the third world is setting up camp in our country and they are all claiming to be fleeing turmoil in thier own country.Britain is being made unrecognizable to the people who were born here as the government bends over backwards to change the laws and traditions of this country to accomodate the demands of the recent arrivals.charity begins at home.all the original live Aid did was keep the population alive long enough to breed another generation twice as big to starve to death and kill each other in the ongoing wars in Africa.let them sort themselves out and let us sort ourselves out for god knows this country is in a big enough mess itself.if we wipe out third world debt and open up the markets then british companies may lose out and british workers may lose thier jobs.how many people find that acceptable?i have yet to meet anyone who cares about 50,000 people a day dieing in Africa.of course they all say it is terrible, those poor babies etc and a few might send a fiver or tenner to oxfam but who actually CARES? how many people have sold thier house and given all the money to the third world?how many people dont buy thier children new clothes or make thier children go without toys so they can send the money to charity?someone who did that would really CARE.i think it is sad but i havent done anything about it because i dont CARE.

I've said it before, the economic rationalists running the globalsiation agenda are firmly in control so what will be will be

Personally I choose to give 3 percent of what ever I earn every year to charity abroad & locally.

PS Without imigration most of the 1st world countries would be going backwards.

Ageing populations coupled with low/negative birth rates = extinction

The majority of the young people live in the third world

You do the sums

You can try and push against the inevitable or you can learn some tolerance

Afterall we are all human once you get past the cultural barriers
