10 PM on Friday nights, the shite that was school over for another week, lights switched off and radio switched on...Tommy Vance takes the teenage Rudi on weekly magic carpet rides to legendary places such as the Hammersmith Odeon to listen to dangerous and compelling music...Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest...blowing my fucking mind in the process!

For a generation of rock'n'roll fans Tommy Vance was as much a part of the music scene as the bands, the venues, the anecdotes and the jackets proudly adorned with badges and autographs. He was our elder statesman, our guru.

For some truly wonderful nights with just the radio for company and for introducing me to a thousand great bands and for starting a lifelong love affair with rock music thank you so much!!

I'll be thinking of you when I see Judas Priest later this month at Hammersmith (How perfect is that?). In the words of Oddy Oddball, "You can't kill rock'n'roll!"

I probably have four DJs to thank for my obsession with music - John Peel, Tommy Vance, Alan Freeman and Nicky Horne.

Can't believe two of them are gone. I used to listen to so much radio in the 70s and early 80s.

Another ex Big-L DJ bites the dust. What sad news!

I remember the very last Fab 40 programme Tommy did on Radio London. A sad time for all Big-L fans and pirate stations in general. We all hoped there would be a reprieve after all the letters fans wrote to Sir Anthony Wedgewood Benn (the 'now' Tony Benn) but we weren't listened to and they were snatched from us. It was brill to hear Tommy and the other DJ's when they were snapped up by Radio 1 and Capital.

A sad day. Tommy will be missed enormously.

Rest in Peace Tommy.

A great voice and for me the best UK DJ of all time. His Vh-1 show "Friday Night Rock Show" was brilliant, it was also the name of his Radio show which was great to!!

He will be sadly missed.
