My brother lives in St Annes, his take on this is that is may have been some kind of 'initiation rite' as they see this kind of thing often (but not to this extreme.
He was walking home with a friend one afternoon when a car pulled up, a guy jumped out ran over flattened my brothers mate with a haymaker, jumped back in the car which sped off, not a word was spoken in the attack.

Quite right---I saw that documentary. The licensing authority spokeswoman seemed more worried about city centre businesses losing trade than the huge jump in crime as a result of cheap drink promotions.

A few years back, a club in Dundee was opened outwith the city centre, and to attract clientele the management were selling drinks at such a low price that you could get totally out of your skull for a couple of quid. Three months down the line, and dozens of court cases later involving said clientele, and the club was closed down never to reopen.
