Whatever people thought of Checnya before all this, I'm sure they are repulsed by the terrorists now.

In the same place a terrorist becomes a Politician.
Putins little stormtrooper's did a wonderful job of proving their own chaos theory.
Such a waste of human life.
Putin's agenda from day 1 was to "sort out Chechnya" and break any previous agreement reached with his predecessor.

It was also only a matter of time before the Chechyan rebels were linked arm in arm with Al Qaida to create a worldwide hatred or condemnation.
The rebels are definately being helped by the Mujahadeen fighters from old Afghanistan and no, Mujahadeen doesn't equate to Al Qaida.
In fact the Mujahadeen were so wonderful, that the U.S funded them indirectly so they wouldn't piss the Russians off.

Yep, no-one comes out of this smelling particularly fragrant.
You'd have thought from the off that a smart guy like Vlad the Dictator would have picked a softer target than the Chechens, who have historically been to the Russians what the Afghans were to the British Empire.

While I have genuine and heartfelt sympathy for innocent the victims of this if past experience is anything to go by this fanatical type of terrorist cannot be bargained with so MAYBE the action this morning, while tragic, saved some lives.

This was only ever gonna end in one of two ways - either the government forces were gonna go in and kill the terrorists or the terrorists were gonna kill all the hostages. Neither side could afford to or was going to give in to the other so this MAY just have been the lesser of two terrible evils

I tend to this view too, although the full facts are nowhere near in yet, and there is much talk of the forces' apparent unpreparedness.
At least this time they managed not to slaughter civilians wholesale.......and bear in mind that at least 20 are thought to have been murdered (journalists please note- it's 'murder', not 'execution'; the latter conveys a wholly spurious legitimacy) by the terrorists before they even got there.

The main lessons to be taken from this are:

a) al Qaida will do what it can to cause trouble between Christians and Muslims. Sources in Moscow have already claimed that the Chechen warlord behind this is being bankrolled by bin Laden's mob. Whether this is an attempt to get more international condemnation, it's too early to say---but it has a ring of truth to it.

b) These same terrorists struck years ago, in maternity hospitals and therefore nowhere can be considered safe and untouchable any more. Someone willing to shoot a child in the head for their "noble cause" is not going to worry about blowing up buses, boats, planes, trains, hospitals or old folk's homes.

c) There are many people whose lives are so bleak and hopeless that they can easily be talked into being walking bombs for evil, manipulative shites who never put their own sacred arses in danger. So long as thousands are consigned to lives of darkness and despair, there'll be plenty of volunteers for the bomb belts. The reprisals coming Chechnya's way will just provide more.

Empathy isn't that difficult. It's imagining yourself suffering someone else's pain, and thinking, No one should have to go through that.
