US entry into World War II
Re: US entry into World War II
Hello Bob, You are right that Graham Greene wrote the film script for 'The Third Man', but this was not included in the script. The director, Carol Reed claimed that Welles made up most of the conversation with Joseph Cotton, on the ferris wheel at the Prater in Vienna. If that is true, it was a remarkable achievement.
Re: US entry into World War II
Greene wrote the 'film-treatment' (or screenplay/script, not sure of the precise description) concurrently wih the novel- the lead-time for book-publishing may have led to the 1950, vs. '49 for the film, release of the latter, but I don't know.
Neither can I remember from my reading the novel back in the mists of time if those actual words appeared, so a resolution must presumably await a better-read forumite.........

Most film anoraks accept that while Greene wrote the story, film treatment etc, the cuckoo clock speech was pure Welles.

I think it likely, too, 4WIW, but I can't prove it either way without re-reading the book- and I'm currently engrossed in the new 1500-page literary Blockbuster 'Magoo's Biggest-ever Bumper Book of Abuse, Unpleasantness and Obnoxiousness' (Hodder & Stoughton and all good remainder-shops, ?37.50 h/back, ?2.99 paperback).........
