okay okay first i'll admit that I am being a bit of a grumpy old bastard here (re: my response to Ace's concorde post), but does anyone else, like me, detest fireworks?
Its not that I really hate them, if used properly and at the right times they can be very spectacular. But I think there is, dare i say, a common and vulgar element to fireworks these days. Where I live I have heard fireworks everyday for about the last 3 weeks, usually from about 6pm onwards, and I know from past years that this will probably continue into the new year.
I think there should be much tighter rules regarging fireworks. I think they should be banned apart from special occaisions, ie. one week surrounding fireworks night, and a week or two around xmas and new year. for some reason people seem to think thats its now 'firework season' and anyone having a party is obliged to have a firework display, or that folk are going out for a few drinks and then going "lets all go back to mine and let some fireworks off". They should also be banned from back gardens, it's too noisy and anti-social, keep them for the parks I say. Its also not uncommon round my way to hear fireworks until the early hours, last night I could hear them on and off untill about 4:30am! that's taking the piss, and surely the culprits were only letting them off to piss off everyone living within a few miles. I reckon they should also be restricted to the larger supermarkets and should not be readily available in every newsagent/off license, as a lot of the 'yob element' seems to come from younger kids these days, kids are always letting them off in the street near me which apart from being a nuisance is also dangerous.
And is it just me or are more fireworks these days just noise and no visuals? I've got a good view of the surrounding area from my windows and you rarely see anything, but you still get the sound.
Like i said, i've got nothing against a properly organised display in a local park, on or near to nov.5th, but i just wish people could find other means of entertainment the rest of the year.
Fireworks
Re: Fireworks
when i was a kid but the novelty soon wore off later, they are a waste of money imv.
Re: Fireworks
I like to think of the celebration on November 5th as being in memory of the only man to enter Parliament with good intentions.
{That's an old Anarchist pre-Election slogan, as in "Vote for Guy Fawkes, the only man etc.")

Re: Fireworks
What you have all over England at present is the five day religious festival,Diwali....nothing to do with our Nov 5th.
So you have fireworks everywhere, morning, noon & night (including the early hours).
Now you know what the Blitz sounded like some 60-years ago!
Take to your shelters, board up your windows, and stay safe!

Re: Fireworks
i don't think the yobs round my way that let fireworks off in the street are celebrating Diwali (i thought the only place that was celebrating that was in Eastenders), or the people that let them off at 3 in the morning. Or for that matter the yobs in the papers today who tied a gerbil to a firework then let it off.

Was he the ghost of Freddy Star ?
But I know what you mean , the scallys start going mad around the end of September in Liverpool , letting fireworks off In chip shops ,phone booths ,postboxes andwhere ! if you go out on a Friday night you have to learn to jump as firing them down the street seems to be the new craze !
Anyone been to Bradford for the Diwali street party ? I went last year its amazing ! I think I got toothache from the free sweets though .......

Re: Fireworks
Small things amuse small brains
I see fireworks displays about 3 times a year which is perfect
I must admit it doesn't hold the same appeal that it used to
Private fireworks in backyards were banned many years ago in Adelaide-South Australia due to the idiots that injured themselves not to mention the fires that the debris from fireworks started streets away.
We crack down hard on inconsiderate people playing loud music at 2am in the morning. In South Australia you can have your stereo confiscated if the cops are called twice
Personally I think keep them for Major events
cheers

Re: Fireworks
I don't agree with fireworks either there to dangerous and ppl don't handle them right when delivering them or ppl get nasty at you when you are only doing your job by asking for ID to buy Fireworks one of our shops as got in alot of trouble for selling firework to someone under the age of 18 we had the email today to warn us as Trading Standards are watching, also heared a rumour as from next year you might have to get a licence to use fireworks i think that is the best idea.
Re: Fireworks
Going back many many years when I was a lad I remember my newsagent telling me that they were only allowed to sell fireworks for 3 weeks before and a week after 5th November. That's obviously gone for a burton. Last weekend there seemed to be an active attempt to recreate the battle of the Somme by the local knuckleheads.
