Searching previous posts.

Is there an easier way of searching previous messages/posts other than by clicking on the "Older Messages" link?
For instance, (And I hope I'm allowed to name another group here. If not, sorry and remove this ASAP.), in the yahoo group, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/The_Phantoms_Haunt/, all the messages are numbered and there is a search box which takes you to that post.
Could something like that be tried here only using a date rather than a number?
If it has been suggested before or isn't technically feasible, my apologies for the waste of time.

Yes, but surely you need to have a specific topic to search for?
Out of curiousity, how far back do the posts go?
